Gold posted a third consecutive week of gains and gold ETPs finally broke a 10-week streak of outflows. Uncertainty around China’s currency policy, volatile equity markets and the realization that a September Fed hike is not a done deal drove the price higher. While current negative sentiment is providing support for gold prices, the near term outlook will depend on central bank discussions coming out of the Jackson Hole this week. Any dovishness is likely to boost the upward momentum for defensive commodities.

Gold ETPs see highest inflows since January. Physical gold ETPs received US$230.6mn of inflows last week, as rising prices has lifted the negative sentiment against the metal. Futures market shorts have also been trimmed for the fourth consecutive week. While a confluence of factors has driven gold prices higher, a standout observation was that the VIX index rose 87% last week, signaling a market shift from greed to fear. Gold has traditionally been the first port of call in times of market stress.

Eight consecutive weeks of oil ETPs inflows follow sharp price declines. Bargain hunting continued last week with US$71.8mn of inflows into long oil ETPs. Brent fell 5.3% and WTI declined 2.6%, as the global production surplus accelerates. WTI had fallen to a 6 ½ year low. ETP investors realize that such low prices will drive a reduction in capex and eventual fall in production, but for now crude inventories in the US are still rising, depressing the price. US oil rigs also continue to reopen, adding to supply. ETP investors will need to be patient and bear with the lag in the response from producers.

ETFS Daily Leveraged Natural Gas (LNGA) received highest inflows in 11 weeks. Natural gas inventories rose less than expected (53Bcf vs. 59% Bcf expected), driving a temporary rally last Wednesday and Thursday. The current period of seasonally high demand from the power sector’s air conditioning needs will likely come to an end in autumn and could place downward pressure on price. LNGA received US$4.3mn last week.

Investors trimmed long coffee ETP exposure by US$4.3mn. With the Brazilian harvest coming close to an end, the realisation that last year’s drought has led to smaller bean sizes this year has driven up prices in recent weeks. However, a benign winter has minimised frost-damage and so what the harvest lacks in quality will be made up for in quantity, which has driven prices lower over the past week. Coffee suffers from a weak Brazilian Real, which has encouraged Brazilian farmers to offload stocks cheaply. Sugar conversely rose 1.2% last week, as concerns around poor monsoon rains in India could lead the market into balance for the first time in six years. Long sugar ETPs attracted US$1mn of inflows.

ETFS Palladium Trust (PALL) saw US$12.0mn of redemptions, the highest since September 2014. With Chinese auto demand remaining soft, prospects for global autocatalyst demand, which accounts for 70% of palladium use, remains poor. However, tightening emissions regulation in Europe in September could see the loadings of platinum group metals rise.

Key events to watch this week. Central bankers will convene at Jackson Hole, Wyoming at a pivotal juncture in the Fed’s rate cycle. Consensus expectations are for a September hike, but speeches and presentations by policy makers could sway opinions.

We are hosting a webinar on the 8th June to cover Friday’s OPEC meeting featuring Amrita Sen, a renowned oil analyst from Energy Aspects – find out more and register.

The premature gains in oil prices that we had seen since March 2015 started to unravel last week with WTI and Brent falling 5% and 6% respectively, before recovering somewhat on Friday. A firmer US dollar had weighed on all commodities. Added to that is a growing consensus that OPEC will not cut production at its June 5th meeting. We will be analyzing the outcome of that meeting in a webinar on June 8th with Amrita Sen from Energy Aspects. To register for the webinar please click here . On Friday we saw a 5% rally in WTI as the market read the larger than expected contraction in US rigs that week as a sign that US producers remain price sensitive.

Oil ETPs see outflows as investors’ expectation of production cuts recede. We have long argued that the gain in prices since March were premature given the lack of evidence of supply tightening. US shale oil rigs have been shut off at break neck speed in recent months, but that trend has come to halt with prices firming. Other high-cost producers will also be cutting back on production, but that process will take some time given the higher lead times. The OPEC is no longer trying to guarantee the rate of return for producers. It wants market share. It is increasingly likely that it will not cut production at its June 5th meeting. We saw US$48.5mn of outflows from long Brent and WTI ETPs, while profit taking withdrew a US$5.1mn from short oil ETPs. Many investors think there will be a better entry point non-US producers cut back on production and tighten global supplies.

ETFS Daily Leveraged Coffee (LCFE) sees its highest ever inflow since inception in 2008. With the price of coffee falling a further 2.6% last week, (29.0% y-o-y), investors saw another bargain hunting opportunity. While the price had rallied excessively in 2014 in response the drought in Brazil at the time, the recent crash in prices appears equally excessive. The 2014 drought which lasted into the February 2015 had irrevocably damaged Brazilian coffee bushes. Although strong rain since February will help recover yields by some margin, the bearish sentiment towards the commodity appears disproportionate. While the USDA and CONAB have revised upward their production estimates from Brazil, leaf rust fungus is rife in Central America, threatening to wipe out production in some of the smaller producing countries. El Niño, however remains a wild card. While the meteorological organisations have declared that the weather pattern will last through the Southern hemisphere winter, its intensity is still unknown. An El Niño could bring a warmer, dryer winter to Brazil, reducing frost damage, which could help the crop.

IMF’s payment extension eases concern of immediate Greek default. While the IMF allowed Greece to delay its 5th June payment to the end of the month, it also acknowledged that the country could leave the Euro area. Gold’s pullback of 1.7% and gold ETP outflows of US$11.6mn last week seem somewhat premature given the that the debt negotiations over the weekend have ended with no resolve.

ETFS Daily Leveraged Natural Gas (LNGA) sees US$2.9mn inflows, the highest in 4 weeks on the back of bargain hunting. An unexpectedly strong gain in gas storage drove prices down 8.2%. However, with summer weather likely to drive demand for gas higher in coming months, investors expect prices to recover.

Key events to watch this week. US payrolls will be the focus of investors this week as the Federal Reserve will remain very data dependent in its rates decisions.

Physical gold ETPs inflows hit 9-month highs.

Long WTI oil ETPs see eighth consecutive week of inflows, totalling US$10.8mn.

Silver ETPs experience third consecutive week of inflows.

ETFS Copper (COPA) received highest inflows since August.

Profit-taking prompts withdrawals of US$6.6mn in ETFS Leveraged Natural Gas (LNGA)

ETFS Soybeans (SOYB) sees largest outflow since April 2013 as El Niño probability increases.

Download the complete report (.pdf)

Gold inflows rose to their highest since February 2013 last week following a 2.4% gain in price. With gold having fallen close to its marginal cost of production (which we estimate at US$1100/oz), investors increasingly believe that mine production will be cut in 2015, helping to tighten supply. At the end of this week the Swiss population will vote on whether to require their central bank to hold 20% of its assets in gold. While opinion polls only show 38% of the population is in favour of the proposal, there is a risk there will be more support on the day. If the proposal does pass, we would expect a sharp rally in gold.

Physical gold ETPs inflows hit 9-month highs. Inflows into physical gold ETPs reached the highest level since early February, totalling US$131.8mn last week, on a combination of bargain hunting and potential for a ‘yes’ result at the Swiss gold referendum. We believe that the Swiss referendum could act as a catalyst for further interest in the metal as the risk of a sharp rally increases.

Long WTI oil ETPs see eighth consecutive week of inflows, totalling US$10.8mn. The OPEC meeting this week will be a pivotal moment in regaining control in a cartel that appears to have lost its way. Discount oil selling by Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq in Asia and the US cannot persist if the cartel is to maintain credibility and we don’t believe the institution that has survived since 1960 will choose to become irrelevant right now. We believe Saudi Arabia will have to cut production in order to soothe the increasing restlessness of the other OPEC members. We remain believe both WTI and Brent benchmarks will increase as supply tightens in 2015.

Silver ETPs experience third consecutive week of inflows. Although silver rallied alongside gold last week, the gold to silver ration still remains at its highest since 2009, indicating that silver remains considerably cheap relative to gold. Continued global growth in 2015 should bode well for industrial silver demand, with Chinese photovoltaic consumption expected to be an area of strong growth in coming years.

ETFS Copper (COPA) received highest inflows since August. Although the copper price has fallen 8.7% year to date, optimism for the metal is growing. Supply surplus forecasts are slowing transforming to supply deficits and demand for industrial metals in general is likely to gain traction as China’s stimulus policy starts to have its desired effect.

Profit-taking prompts withdrawals of US$6.6mn in ETFS Leveraged Natural Gas (LNGA). The Henry Hub natural gas price surged 12.9% last week as colder weather hit the east coast of the US. The cold snap is likely to eat into storage levels earlier in the season than initially expected. Nevertheless, the US meteorologists believe that the winter will be relatively mild allowing for a rebuild in inventory levels after the cold snap.

ETFS Soybeans (SOYB) sees largest outflow since April 2013 as El Niño probability increases. Last week, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology increased the odds of an El Niño event this winter to 70% from 50% previously. An El Niño typically improves soy growing conditions in Brazil and Argentina and will be price negative should it materialise. Investors withdrew US$7.9mn flow from SOYB.

Key events to watch this week. Preliminary Q3 GDP data scheduled to be release for the US, the UK and Canada next week, likely highlighting the buoyancy of these three countries compared to other major economies like the Eurozone and Japan. CPI data for the latter countries will give clarity on the need for further stimulus in 2015 from the ECB and BOJ

Commodity ETPs saw their largest inflows in six weeks, with bargain-hunters attracted by depressed valuations. Several commodities including Brent, platinum, palladium and most industrial metals rose last week rebounding on the back of the better investor sentiment toward commodities. With many commodities trading so close to their marginal cost of production, we believe that prices cannot fall much lower without triggering a supply response. Better-than-expected GDP and industrial production data from China, the world’s largest consumer of commodities, also helped boost cyclical commodity prices.

Inflows into physical gold reach six week highs. There was US$22.6mn of inflows into physical gold last week as the price of the metal fell a further 0.4%. With gold trading just above our estimated marginal cost of
production (US$1,100/lb), a natural floor to the metal appears to have been reached.

Bargain hunting drives US$12.3mn into long crude oil ETPs, a seven week high. After reaching a 5-year low the previous week, Brent oil, recovered 2.8% last week. WTI on the other hand continued to slip 0.7%. At bargain prices, ETP investors bought into crude, with US$5.1mn flowing into long Brent ETPs and US$7.2mn into long WTI ETPs. According to media reports (although not confirmed officially), Saudi Arabia cut supplies by 328,000 barrels a day in September to 9.36 million barrels a day. Ample supply has been weighing on prices and if confirmed, Saudi’s moves could help prices recover further.

ETFS Daily Leveraged Natural (LNGA) attracts US$9.mn as Henry Hub prices slide 4.6%. Natural gas prices fell as working gas in storage rose 94Bcf last week. Storage values however remain 9.0% below year-ago levels and 9.1% below the 5-year historical average. Natural gas is a commodity that is highly sensitive to changes in weather that experience sharp supply drawdowns and investors are betting on a price rebound ahead of winter peak demand.

ETFS Platinum Trust (PPLT) sees largest outflow since March on profit-taking. Platinum rose 1.5% last week driving a US$6.1mn redemption from PPLT. Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) disclosed that the five-month strike earlier this year had cost the company 424,000 ounces in lost production and it lost a further 108,000 ounces in the subsequent ramp-up. However, it also confirmed it has resumed production a month ahead of schedule, which could cap gains in the near-term.

An 11% decline in coffee prices led to profit-taking for ETFS Daily Short Coffee (SCFE). US$2.2mn was redeemed from SCFE, marking the highest outflow from the short coffee ETP since May. The violent price moves have polarised investors with US$1.6mn flowing into ETFS Daily Leveraged Coffee (LCFE) last week – the highest in six weeks. Drought and irregular rain in Brazil, the world’s top producer has hurt the prospect for the 2015 crop. However, with rains resuming, the flowering process has started for the 2015 crop, but analysts are divided in their opinion as to the extent the earlier disruptions will damage the crop.

Key events to watch this week. All eyes will be on the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting in which the central bank is expected to announce the end of its asset buying programme. Any extension of its programme could trigger a rally in gold prices as currency debasement fears linger for longer. Weighing on investors’ minds is the prospect of rate rises, which we expect to occur in H1 2015. Investors will listen for cues from the Fed on this front.

Commodity ETP Weekly Prepare for Short-Covering Rallies

ETFS Daily Short Gold (SBUL) saw its highest redemption since inception.
Inflows of US$6.8mn for long agricultural ETP baskets indicates that investors see value in grains after falling to their lowest price levels since 2010.
ETFS Daily Leveraged Natural Gas (LNGA) saw US$4.6mn of inflows, the highest in 9 weeks, as storage values came under expectations.
Long nickel ETPs received US$1.4mn of inflows as the Indonesian government reiterated that the ore export ban from will remain.

Bargainhunting investors are beginning to be attracted by lower commodity prices, with positive flows into agricultural baskets and silver signaling a belief that the bottom is near. Nonetheless, most commodity prices continued lower in the past week and softer sentiment in some sectors prompted outflows. Gold remained under pressure last week, with all indications that the Federal Reserve’s policy stance will be tighter in 2015. Ongoing concern over the outlook for China also weighed on the performance of industrial metals and industrially-inclined precious metals. We believe that with speculative shorts across many commodities having risen to multi-period highs, the prospect for short-covering rallies is high. Over the coming weeks, investors are likely to start building long positions with most commodity trading at or near the cost of production.

ETFS Daily Short Gold (SBUL) saw its highest redemption since inception. After a protracted period of building up shorts on gold, investors pulled back as the price of gold approaches our estimated all-in cost of production and the widely watched support level near US$1,200/oz. US$47.7mn flowed out of SBUL, wiping out the seven months of flows into the short product. While investors continued to pare their long gold positions as well, with US$51mn leaving physical gold ETPs last week, taking further bets on a decline in price seems risky at this point.

Inflows of US$6.8mn for long agricultural ETP baskets indicates that investors see value in grains after falling to their lowest price levels since 2010. Marking the highest inflow in 9 weeks, we believe that sentiment is slowly turning. Investors have been buying wheat ETPs for 19 consecutive weeks now and there is a growing sense that all ‘good’ production news has now been priced in. Meanwhile sugar prices bounced up 6.6%, attracting a further US$0.9mn into ETFS Sugar (SUGA), marking 8 consecutive weeks of flows into the ETP. Sugar remains close to a 4-year low as the fifth consecutive year of surplus is expected this year.

ETFS Daily Leveraged Natural Gas (LNGA) saw US$4.6mn of inflows, the highest in 9 weeks, as storage values came under expectations. US natural gas stocks increased by 97 billion cubic feet in the week ending September 19. That compared with an expected increase of about 100 billion cubic feet anticipated by analysts and sent prices 1.6% higher last week. As we approach winter, seasonal demand for natural gas will rise. A failure to build inventory or an unusually cold winter like last year could be key catalysts for sustained price increases.

Long nickel ETPs received US$1.4mn of inflows as the Indonesian government reiterated that the ore export ban will remain. Indonesia, the world’s largest nickel producer, had implemented the ban in January this year and has unusually stuck to it in a bid to develop domestic smelting facilities. Nickel prices nevertheless fell, along with other industrial metals on the back of softer-than-expected PMIs and durable goods data.

Key events to watch this week. US payrolls will be the centre of attention this week as the market judges the capacity of the US economy to absorb an interest rate hike that will eventually follow when the Fed finishes its period of extraordinary monetary support. A strong reading is likely to be US dollar positive and weigh on commodities priced in the currency. After the lacklustre take-up of the TLTRO (the ECB’s form or quantitative easing), the market will be keen to hear President Draghi’s view of the programme at the ECB’s post-policy meeting conference.
