Highlights

  • Gold ETP inflows receive US$20.6mn for the second consecutive week after a mixed payroll report.
  • Strong price gains in the crude oil market prompt large outflows from oil ETPs worth US$73mn.

Download the complete report (.pdf)

Gold ETP inflows increase for the second consecutive week amounting to US$20.6mn following a mixed payroll report. The pace of inflows has slowed considerably for gold ETPs over the past month. While the jobless rate fell, wages were a weak spot in October (rising 2.4% vs est 2.7% y-o-y). However with payroll gains averaging about 162,000 over the prior three months and the economy nearing maximum employment, the third rate hike by the Fed this year seems certain, adding further downside pressure on gold prices in the near term.

Profit taking sees outflows from Oil ETPs worth US$73mn, as the rally in the oil market continues unabated. A reduction in crude and oil product stocks in the US reported by API data supported prices higher last week. In addition, according to a Reuters survey, OPEC oil production fell by 80,000bpd in October primarily owing to a decline in production of 120,000bpd by Iraq and a record high compliance of 86% as a result of the Kurdish conflict. So far the oil rally has been supported by deep OPEC supply cuts and a cyclical upturn in the economy. This seems unlikely to last and should weigh on oil prices in the near term. Speculative net long positioning in Brent have risen to a record level, two standard deviations above the five year average, suggesting a stronger potential for correction in Brent vs WTI crude oil prices.

Thematic equity ETFs, Robotics and Cybersecurity continued to see steady inflows last week, totalling US$14mn and US$4.3mn respectively. So far Q3 earnings season has been broadly positive for these two sectors with 76% and 65% earnings beat among cyber security and technology stocks globally. Interestingly a large number of cyber security stocks have beat analyst earnings estimates by a wide margin. While valuations remain high for both sub sectors, they are broadly in line with the long term average versus the technology sector.

Inflows into European equity ETPs rose by US$5.1mn reversing the prior week’s trend as German and UK benchmark indices posted record highs. Eurozone manufacturing PMIs rose to a six year high of 58.5 in October bolstering expectations of a continuous recovery in the Euro region. Despite the first rate hike by the Bank of England (BOE) in a decade, a softer inflation outlook and Brexit uncertainties indicated they were in no rush to hike rates again supporting UK equities.

Recent price strength in Nickel, drove outflows from nickel ETPs worth US$8.6mn. Renewed optimism of demand from electric vehicles amidst supply constraints, helped Nickel prices post a 9% weekly gain.

Long EUR ETPs draw in the highest inflows in 5 weeks amounting to US$8mn

ETF Securities Weekly Flows Analysis – Largest weekly inflows into Robotics since inception

Highlights

  • Minor gold outflows of US$12.6mn, following inflows over the previous 5 weeks, totalling US$312mn.
  • Recent rising oil prices have led to outflows in 12 of the last 13 weeks, totalling US$381mn.

Download the complete report (.pdf)

Gold saw minor outflows of US$12.6mn, following gold inflows over the previous 5 weeks totalling US$312mn. The previous weeks of inflows are on a par to inflows seen in February this year. The gold market has been wrestling with the fact that corporate confidence data (PMIs) has highlighted that developed world growth is at a cycle high, which typically dampens sentiment for gold. Conversely, geopolitical risks, including Catalonia and North Korea keep escalating. The threat of a December interest rate hike in the US and possible tighter monetary policy from the ECB and UK is also likely to put pressure on gold prices in the coming months, particularly as we continue to see better than expected corporate earnings. This does not mean that there is a significant downside risk to gold though, as investors are very aware of the bubble in bonds, alongside higher valuations in equities and therefore see gold as an insurance policy against a correction and geopolitical crises. Supporting this is data highlighting an outflow of US$2.6mn year-to-date from short gold ETFs.

Recent rising oil prices have led to outflows in 12 of the past 13 weeks, totalling US$381mn, with US$13mn withdrawn last week. The outflows suggest investors do not feel that the recent rise in oil prices is sustainable. News of falling inventories in the US, fears for production in Kurdistan, production constraints caused by recent hurricanes and the potential for an OPEC production freeze extension have pushed up prices to the upper levels of our expected range of US$60/bbl. We believe oil prices have reached a high due to the downwards price pressures, being a continued lack in production freeze compliance from OPEC, a significant pick up in oil production and exports from the US and the Iraq-Kurdistan conflict having little impact on oil production in the region.

Industrial metals saw inflows last week totalling US$13mn despite recent strong price performance. Seasonally, industrial precious metals tend to fall in October and November, we see any price weakness in the coming months as an opportunity to take advantage of the continued improving fundamentals of supply-side destruction, multi-year supply deficits and increasing autos demand.

We continue to see interest in Robotics with inflows last week totalling US$33mn, the largest weekly inflow since inception (October 2014). Inflows year-to-date now total US$467mn.

ETF Securities Weekly Flows Analysis – China congress to potentially weigh on metal prices

Highlights

  • Precious metals ETPs recorded US$155mn inflows driven by inflows into gold, platinum and the basket ETPs.
  • Inflows into disruptive technology ETPs continue to grow on attractive valuation of the ROBO Global® Robotics and Automation UCITS Index compared to the MSCI World Technology Index.
  • Investors favoured exposure to the Eurozone to specific European countries as Brexit negotiations face a deadlock, increasing the uncertainty over the future relationship between the UK and EU.

Download the complete report (.pdf)

Gold ETPs recorded inflows for the second consecutive week as the Chinese market reopened. Last week saw the price of gold rising to nearly US$1,300/oz after falling 6.3% from its 12-month high in early September. This could be a transitory recovery as the prospect of a rate hike and a stronger US Dollar is likely to weigh further on gold prices in the near term. We see the price of gold at US$1260/oz by year end. China auto sales rose by 3.3% year-over-year to September, benefitting platinum group metals. Platinum and palladium rose respectively 3.3% and 5.6% last week. Investors injected US$12.5mn into platinum ETPs as platinum ended last week at US$55/oz discount to palladium. The price of platinum has also been lagging the price of gold so far this year, rising by 4.8% versus 13.4% for gold year-to-date. We continue to believe in the potential catch-up of platinum in the near term.

Industrial metals saw inflows of US$16.5m as prices reached a 3-year high. The Bloomberg Industrial Metals Index has gained 23% since the beginning of the year, and 2.6% over the past week, reaching the highest level since the end of 2014. Flows into industrial metal ETPs have been choppy since the end of August, with large outflows recorded in September as prices declined 5% from the peak. Prices bounced back again in October despite Chinese markets being closed during the first week of the month. Inflows last week went mainly into the basket ETPs (US$22.8mn) and copper (US$5.9mn) while other industrial metal ETPs recording outflows. The China congress on Wednesday could put downward pressure on metal prices although market participants have been pricing it as a non-event so far.

Robotics and Cyber security ETPs continued to see steady inflows last week with US$23mn in the Robotic ETP and US$2mn in the Cybersecurity ETP. Our model shows that the ROBO Global® Robotics and Automation UCITS Index currently trades at a discount to the MSCI World Technology Index while the ISE Cyber Security® UCITS Index Net Total Return trades at a slightly higher level compared to its historical average, indicating that the Robotic ETP has higher upside potential.

European ETPs saw inflows of US$6.9mn mostly in short ETPs. Investors have increased their short exposure to individual European countries (France, UK and Germany) by US$8.4mn whilst increasing their exposure to the region at the same time with US$2.1mn into long EuroSTOXX ETPs. Investors appear somewhat polarised, the negotiations on the future relationship between the UK and the EU being in a deadlock as no agreement on the divorce bill has been reached.

After a tumultuous month for gold, recent price weakness has prompted inflows of US$148mn over the last week, with a further US$16mn of inflows into other precious metals.

Negative sentiment over the last month has been primarily focussed on gold, while other precious metals have seen continued inflows, we believe this is due to the preeminent position of the sector as a safe haven destination. Gold, being seen as a risk hedge by many investors, has cooled in price recently due to the lack of news flow on geo-political worries. At the same time, market is continuing to focus on a Fed rate hike in December where market pricing suggests an 80% chance of a rate hike. Predictit.org also highlights the probabilities of the new Fed governorship being a race between Kevin Warsh, currently leading amongst bookies, and Jerome Powell. The former being seen as more hawkish on monetary policy relative to Janet Yellen, while Jerome Powell has similarly dovish views. We believe the prospect of a rate hike and a more hawkish governor is likely to weigh on gold prices in coming months.

We continue to see position reduction for industrial metals, with outflows of US$45m for the week, bringing outflows for the month to US$174m.

Prices for industrial metals have been strong this year having peaked with an average 22% gain. This week has seen further strong performance of 3% off the back of positive manufacturing data from the US and thin trading volumes from China due to Golden week. The outflows have been most concentrated in copper (US$34mn for the week) and the broad basket of industrials metals. The laggard in terms of performance this year, nickel, has seen inflows over the week of US$6mn.

We continue to expect a pullback in industrial metals because there are threats to the current rally due to this strong momentum. Historically, periods in which trading volumes in China have risen sharply have been followed by a correction. These pullbacks are usually an opportunity to shake out momentum trades and allow the market to focus on fundamentals. Given the significant declines in capital expenditure in recent years we continue to see deficits increase. Even though capital expenditure may soon start to increase, there remains long lead times in exploration and development of mines. We expect supplies to remain tight with the market unlikely to achieve balance in the short term.

Thematic equity ETFs, Robotics and Cyber security continued to see steady inflows last week with US$25mn and US$3mn, respectively.

Recent price strength in cocoa, which has risen 7.8% in recent months has seen investors take profits this week with US$9mn outflows.
